Kumar Venkataraman serves as Chairman of the Finance Department and holds the Fabacher Endowed Professorship in Alternative
Asset Management in the Cox School of Business at Southern Methodist
University. He received a Ph.D. in Finance from Arizona State
University.
Research:
Venkataraman specializes in the area
of market microstructure and writes about financial market design;
evaluation of trading strategies; and functioning of equity, debt and
commodity markets. He has presented his research in many
universities, Wall Street firms, academic conferences and regulatory
bodies, including the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)
and Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).
His
research has been published in major international finance and
accounting journals and featured in industry publications such as The
CFA Digest, many text books, and in the business press, including Wall Street Journal, Barron’s,
Financial Times, Economist and Bloomberg News. He is involved with consulting projects
sponsored by Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) and the
CFTC. He also serves as a consultant and/or an expert witness in
enforcement cases.
Teaching: Dr. Venkataraman
teaches courses on many investment topics including trading
strategies of Hedge Funds.
Awards & Honors:
Venkataraman serves as Associate Editor of Journal of Financial Research and Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis and
on the Board of Directors of Texas Hedge Fund Association. He has
received many Research Excellence and Outstanding Teaching Awards
including the 2010 Boghetich Family
Distinguished Teaching Award and the 2008 Gerald J. Ford Senior
Research Fellowship. His papers have received research awards at
international academic conferences.
Notably, Kumar was named
among “The Best 40 B-School Profs Under the Age
of 40” in the 2011 Poets & Quants ranking of
Business School professors.
Personal: Married to Kalyani, and has two daughters, Anushka and Sanjana.
Kumar enjoys reading books and playing tennis.
